MC Brett: The 5th International IAMM Conference

I had the honor of being the Master of Ceremonies at the the 5th International Conference of the International Association for Music and Medicine (IAMM) from June 7th-10th 2018 in Barcelona.

When I was asked to be the emcee I accepted immediately.  The entire conference was full of interesting presentations from luminaries in the Music Therapy field as well as medical professionals.

This is an exciting time for the field of Music Therapy for many reasons, but one is the growing evidence of how music therapy interventions help people in various ways.  Just like the study I was involved in during my masters practicum, brain imaging techniques (and the increasing availability and lower cost of the equipment to measure brain activity) are demonstrating the effectiveness of music therapy in ways that couldn’t be measured previously.

It was a fantastic event and I met so many interesting and impressive people: Music Therapists, researchers, doctors, and other medical professionals.  Here are some photos:

Me welcoming the attendees and introducing the first speakers

Me with Dr. Josep Plans, Organizing Committee President Núria Escudé, and IAMM President Dr. Patravoot Vatanasapt

A social highlight was the drum circle… I don’t mean to brag, but I was given the biggest drum 😉

With 2 inspiring music therapists and two of my personal mentors: Dr. Amy Clements-Cortez (Canada) and Brian Schreck (USA)

With Music Therapist/Professor Josi Trevizan (Brazil) and recent graduate of the University of Barcelona Music Therapy Master program Gabi Costantini (Paraguay)

The final day (I didn’t have to wear a tie!) with music therapists/students from (L-R): Turkey, USA (me), Austria, Peru, Brazil, and Colombia
